  6. shifts its emphasis from a short-term greed-generated search for
  7. profit to long-term goals inspired by dedication to America's
  8. future.

  13.     Most kids think people who are good at math or science are
  14. nerds. One way to transfer the thrill of competition to science is
  15. through fairs. These activities stimulate long-term interest in the
  16. sciences. They are run by volunteers and don't depend on fickle
  17. federal policy or even on in-school instruction. They provide
  18. students with hands-on scientific experience (not just
  19. memorization) and allow recognition for achievement.
