One can predict that American education will beef up its
emphasis on science (EDUCATION, Sept. 11) the day American business
shifts its emphasis from a short-term greed-generated search for
profit to long-term goals inspired by dedication to America's
future.

Most kids think people who are good at math or science are
nerds. One way to transfer the thrill of competition to science is
through fairs. These activities stimulate long-term interest in the
sciences. They are run by volunteers and don't depend on fickle
federal policy or even on in-school instruction. They provide
students with hands-on scientific experience (not just
memorization) and allow recognition for achievement.
